Habitat comprises a new body of work in etching, woodblock and lino prints. Jo has worked on small scale blocks expanding each image by layering colours, adding collage and stitching thus creating composite prints which are either unique prints or very small editions.

The Habitat in focus is the SE Forests of NSW ,where Jo and her husband have a bush hideaway. This biologically diverse area will be is familiar to most Canberrans’ who travel to the South Coast for holidays and weekends. The work reflects upon the importance of retaining vulnerable native habitats for our flora and fauna.

Artists Statement

“Being inexhaustible, life and nature are a constant stimulus for a creative mind.” (Hans Hofmann)

Natural Selection is an exhibition comprised of a selection of some key artworks from the past 6 years, plus exciting new prints continuing on my journey with bird and plant forms.

I am a full time practicing artist living in Canberra. I specialise in printmaking techniques to produce unique prints and limited edition etchings.

Everyday details and situations is food for imagination and creativity. I prefer to concentrate on the beauty of small things and be selective about what I focus on. My mission is to create work that elevates the mood.

Drawing is seeing. It is the basis of everything I do. It is a way of life. Ideas for prints are born from drawing. The drawing evolves from pencil and paper to acid and zinc or some other print medium. Even though I also love to paint and collage, printmaking is the core of my art making.

I like to explore the painterly aspects of printmaking, experimenting in textures and colours as much as possible. This can be achieved by manipulating the ink on the printing plate, combining techniques, mixing colour and adding collaged papers. I love the sometimes random results that can be achieved by direct colour mixing and layering the ink on the plate.

My editions are small and reflect a sensitivity for the art of etching, producing delicate imagery with emotional undertones.
